Mathoura Public School is situated in a small rural community located in the southern Riverina, halfway between the townships of Deniliquin and Echuca.  Mathoura is the administrative centre of the Shire of Murray.

Mathoura Public School is the only school in the town, which has a population of approximately 700 people.  As the enrolment of 60 students is drawn mostly from the township families, most children live within cycling and walking distance to the school.  Conveyance subsidies are used by the other students, as there are no bus services.  Support is provided by the Country Areas Program (CAP).

The shared views of the school and community on the essential outcomes of education for the students of the school are "to empower our students with literacy, numeracy, communication and social skills in order to become individuals capable of fulfilling a rewarding role in society."
